Entrepreneurial students from The Latimer Arts College in Kettering, Northamptonshire, recently took part in a Dragons’ Den style challenge to create the perfect Christmas-themed product or service to pitch to local business leaders.

Over 200 Year 7 students worked to come up with ideas in just three hours, with the support of teaching staff, governors, 6th formers and external business representatives.

They then took to the stage of the Masque Theatre to present their proposals under the scrutiny of Dragons from Wicksteed Pavilion, National Accident Helpline and More Fire PR Ltd.

Ideas on show included a Secret Shopper App, ‘Rudolph Run’ board game, the Best of Buddies electronic device, and a Wrap ‘n Go gift wrapping machine. Students also had to consider brand, budgeting and marketing strategies in their plans.

The event was part of The Latimer Arts College’s ongoing ‘Raising Aspirations’ programme, which has been designed to encourage students to increase their employability skills and raise awareness of career opportunities.

Simon Trott, managing director of National Accident Helpline and one of the Dragons, said:

“The idea of children learning business skills at an early age will set them up very well for the future. They are gaining important financial and marketing skills, and have shown some great ideas on product innovation.”

Jyoti Pankhania, Assistant Principal at The Latimer Arts College, added:

“Our students are embracing the opportunity they have been given by the local business community and have shown exceptional skills in teamwork, problem-solving and creative thinking.”
