Conferencing + Events News — 13 October 2018

The work of Derbyshire-based health & safety event experts Harrier has been in the spotlight during the summer event season. The Castle Donington company has brought years of event management and health & safety expertise to the much-anticipated Jay-Z and Beyoncé On the Run II Tour, and two dates of Taylor Swift’s UK visit.

These major events mark a hugely successful period for Harrier. The team worked across several dates of the On the Run II UK tour, including the world premiere at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium. Harrier had been on hand at the Etihad Stadium just days before, for the visit of Taylor Swift and were also on hand to assist at her concert under the famous Wembley arch.

Harrier assisted the promoter, Live Nation, for these major summer events in a number of ways. From liaising with local authorities, venue teams and organisers, through to implementing a team of health & safety personnel during the performances themselves; Harrier’s main priority is to provide a safe, yet comfortable and enjoyable environment for the audience.

Harrier’s Managing Director, Andy Smith, said, “This has been such a phenomenal year for us here at Harrier, to bring our expertise and know-how to two of the major tours, running concurrently during the summer was challenging but hugely rewarding. We had a team of eight health and safety advisors who worked across these gigs, with some of them leapfrogging from one venue to the next. Ultimately Harrier is as good as the people it employs and I’m proud of each and every one that worked on site, not only did they do a fantastic job of ensuring the events were run safely but for being such fantastic representatives of our business.

Over a period of approximately 30 days, spanning five different venues, Harrier’s team carefully planned and implemented various integral aspects of event health & safety. This included working with the artists’ production teams to ensure that they, and ultimately the performers themselves, were safe on the stage.

Andy explained, “Collaboration and communication has always been a vital part of what we do here at Harrier and it’s especially important for these major tours. Often we are dealing with individuals based overseas or employed on other events, so we need to have plans in place to hit the ground running when we do eventually get on site, after all, we don’t have the option to move the deadline and ask the audience to come back the next day. We were privileged to work with such skilled and knowledgeable production teams, venue staff and site managers on each event. Tens of thousands of people attend these gigs – which was amazing to see! – and it’s vital everyone works as a team to make sure deadlines are met and all are kept safe.”

This summer has been the busiest in Harrier’s history. The specialists have not only been involved in ensuring Taylor Swift’s and the On the Run II tour events ran smoothly, but have also worked at many other major festivals taking place across the UK. This includes Detonate Festival in Nottingham, which took place on 9 June – the same day Harrier had staff onsite with Jay Z and Beyoncé at Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Taylor Swift in Manchester and Capital Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium.

Working on the health & safety of so many major festivals and events all in one summer is a testament to Harrier’s expertise and the company’s committed team.
